SOLE Defined is the Washington Metro area’s leading arts organization specializing in percussive dance – using the body as an instrument to create musical expression. Advancing styles such as Tap, Stepping, Body Percussion, Sand Dance, and Gumboot; this BIPOC led company infuses powerful skills to delight and inspire audiences.
Founded in 2011 by Ryan Johnson and Quynn Johnson, SOLE Defined’s mission is to use percussive dance to entertain the masses, educate communities, and empower youth. Through live performances and arts education programming, they preserve the legacy of percussive dance and expose the art form to a new generation.
SOLE Defined has performed on stages internationally and nationally, including The World Children’s Festival (Italy), Tap In Rio (Brazil), International Festival de Cajon (Peru), Danse Encore (Canada), The Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), Lincoln Center (New York), Jacob’s Pillow (Massachusetts), The Smithsonian (Washington, D.C.), and more. SOLE Defined has premiered five shows and, as an inaugural Artist in Residence at Dance Place in Washington, D.C., has become one of the leading emerging dance companies in the United States.
For Education for the Arts, SOLE Defined will present an action-packed, rhythmic rollercoaster that explores the elements of percussive dance. The immersive performances will intertwine Hip Hop music, Tap, and Stepping, bringing audiences dancing along the way. The show will create a safe space for students to become both dancer and musician. Get ready to explore ways to create music with your body.
Their high-powered fusion of percussive dance, comedy, and audience participation is simply amazing. – Claire Mayer, DansEncore
