Spotlight Kalamazoo artist Todd Zimmerman (1963-2022) at your school using works both whimsical and realistic. Zimmerman was a self-taught artist who practiced and created constantly. As early as fourteen years old, Zimmerman worked on his own graphic novel and created imaginative and beautifully illustrated characters throughout his lifetime.
Students will see works that explore his fantastical thought process, such as his designs for spacecraft, like the The “BigPie” Reed Boat Oar’o’Matic, or animals acting as people. At the same time, students will examine how such an imaginative artist also portrayed people in a realistic manner. Often when painting a realistic figure, Zimmerman played with colors, painting people in shades of blues and reds or yellows and pinks, giving us a moment of surprise and wonder.
Through paintings and prints, students will explore works created in their own community.
Education for the Arts is proud to partner with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts to present this traveling exhibition.
